This religious order lives the
Rule of
St. Francis, and easily witnesses to the overlap of Celtic Christian
spirituality and Franciscan spirituality.
Those who are familiar with Francis know
he came from an area of Italy influenced by the Celtic Christian
spirituality of the Celtic monks who were missionaries on mainland
Europe. One of the largest of these Celtic monastic sites in
Italy was in Bobbio. Francis' mother was French, also influenced by the
Celtic Christian spirituality which permeated her homeland for a
thousand years before Francis was born.
Those wishing to live the life of a
Franciscan begin with one canonical year of novitiate during which
time they will prepare spiritually for their life by studying and
praying over the Rule as written by Francis.
Time will be given during these twelve
months to study the life of Francis, and the spirituality he lived
and preached. This is not a time for academic studies, but a
time set aside specifically for spiritual growth in the Franciscan
spirit.
At the end of the novitiate period a
brother or sister may profess first vows, normally for a period of
three years. After those years there is an option of renewing
those vows yearly for another three years, or making a final
profession of the vows in a public setting.
Working on one's spiritual life is a
life-long work. Do few things and do them well. Simple
joys are holy!
